How To Divide Bearded Irises

Bearded irises are beautiful and easy to grow, but after a few years they can become overcrowded and stop blooming. The solution is to divide them! In this article, we will teach you how to divide bearded irises in just a few simple steps.

Step 1: Choose the right time

The best time to divide bearded irises is in late summer or early fall, when the plants have finished blooming and are starting to go dormant. This gives them plenty of time to establish new roots before winter sets in. If you live in a warm climate, you can also divide irises in the spring.

Step 2: Dig up the clump

Using a garden fork or spade, carefully dig up the entire clump of irises. Bearded irises have thick, fleshy roots that can be easily damaged, so be gentle. If the clump is too large to handle, you can use a sharp knife or pruning shears to cut it into smaller sections.

Step 3: Separate the rhizomes

Once you have the clump out of the ground, separate the individual rhizomes from each other. Rhizomes are the thick, horizontal stems that bearded irises grow from. You may need to gently pry them apart with your hands or a tool. Be sure to discard any unhealthy or dead rhizomes.

Step 4: Trim the leaves and roots

Trim the leaves back to about six inches and cut the roots down to three or four inches. This will help the plant conserve energy and focus on growing new roots. It also makes it easier to replant the rhizomes without damaging them.

Plant each rhizome in a hole that is wide enough to accommodate its roots. The top of the rhizome should be level with the soil surface. Be sure to space the rhizomes at least 12 inches apart to allow for future growth. Water the newly planted irises well.

Water your newly divided irises regularly until they are established. They should receive at least an inch of water per week. In the spring, fertilize them with a balanced fertilizer. Bearded irises prefer full sun and well-drained soil. Keep an eye out for pests and diseases, and remove any dead or diseased foliage promptly.
